Wexford artists create unique globes for GOAL
UNIQUE pieces of art created by several Wexford artists will be exhibited at Kelly’s Hotel, Rosslare this week as part of a public arts fundraising campaign for the charity GOAL.
Designs by Wexford-based artists Bernadette Doolan, Helen McLean, Zane Zutra and Jackie Edwards go on display at the Rosslare Strand venue from today (Tuesday) , along with a film by Wexford town photographer, Padraig Grant, showing some of his work.
Artists from around the country were given a blank, white resin Planet Earth sculpture at the start of the summer and asked to create a design of the choice on the globe. The 100 globes are currently available to view online at www.goalwhatonearth.ie - with bidding having already started - and they will be touring the country over the coming weeks.
Helen McLean, who opened a studio in Wexford in 2004, has created a globe that celebrates the work of GOAL overseas.
‘I wanted the earth’s surface to be alive with light and to project a sense of hope and positivity. I also wanted to highlight the shadows that cover many parts of the world. All of the materials used are recycled - broken mirrors, disused coins and jewels becoming the raw materials for my art piece.’
Padraig Grant, who has travelled overseas on several occasions with GOAL over the past 20 years, has provided a short film of some of the his most stunning photography from GOAL programmes in countries such as Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia.
‘This project has already captured the imagination of the arts community in Ireland, and I expect the public to fall in love with it too,’ said National Alan Vard.
The online auction is now open at www.goalwhatonearth.ie and the globes will remain on that site and open to bidding until Thursday, November 28, at 7 p.m.
A selection of the globes are on display at Kelly’s Hotel from today (Tuesday, October 23) to Saturday, October 27.
