Gorey still on course for Under-15 double
Coiste action moves into final weeks
THE 2018 People Newspapers Coiste na nÓg Championships are in their final couple of weeks now, with the destination of just five titles still to be decided.
The first of those is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) in St. Patrick’s Park at 7.15 p.m. and sees Starlights face Ballinastragh Gaels for the Gorey Guardian Under-15 football Premier shield.
The Gorey District side won by a landslide when these teams met in the round-robin stages back in April, but there’s a lot of water under the bridge since then and a close, intriguing battle is expected.
On Saturday morning another one of the ‘biggies’ will be decided when Naomh Eanna meet Buffers Alley for the Enniscorthy Guardian Under-15 hurling Premier championship title in St. Patrick’s Park at 11 a.m.
Both sides have lost just once this season to date. The Alley fell to their final opponents early in the season in a tight battle, while Gorey came a cropper when travelling down to Fethard in August, with their place in the knockouts already assured.
In the semi-finals, Naomh Eanna got the better of the Faythe Harriers by two points in a low-scoring encounter (1-5 to 1-3) last week.
Buffers Alley beat Glynn-Barntown by the same margin in their last four clash in mid-September, so they will be hoping the 42-day gap won’t be detrimental to their chances.
The Premier shield final, between HWH-Bunclody and St. Martin’s - winners over Fethard on Wednesday in the last semi-final of the season - had been scheduled to follow that clash, but that game has been postponed, with a new date to be announced in due course.
On Tuesday of next week (October 30, St. Patrick’s Park, 7.15 p.m.), Oylegate-Glenbrien face Our Lady’s Island/St. Fintan’s for the Gorey Guardian Under-15 football Roinn 1 shield, after their decider last week was postponed because of a bereavement.
Currently the last scheduled final of the season takes place on November 3 and pits Naomh Eanna, who will be hoping to have the chance to complete a double, against Glynn-Barntown in the Gorey Guardian Under-15 football Premier championship final.
It’s roles reversed for this final, with Gorey’s last game back at the end of September, when they beat Sarsfields to make the final.
Glynn-Barntown drew with Fethard the same day but came through the replay two weeks later to set up this intriguing decider (1-9 to 1-6).
Wexford People Minor football Premier championship final: Naomh Eanna 3-8, Starlights 1-7.
