Enniscorthy move to top

-

ENNISCORTHY CLIMBED to the top of the Leinster League Division 1A table by virtue of their five-try bonus point win in Kilkenny on Saturday.

They were down by 14 points after only seven minutes but came back strongly to win convincingly in a highly-entertaining game.

Kilkenny were awarded a penalty try after only three minutes when full-back Richard Dunne impeded his opposite number, preventing him from scoring.

Four minutes later it got worse for the visitors as the Kilkenny right wing finished off an impressive move through their backs to score their second try which was converted.

Enniscorthy were playing into the breeze and it took them a while to settle.

In the second quarter their forwards began to dominate and this pressure paid off when out-half Ivan Poole sold a beautiful dummy to touch down under the posts.

Just on half-time after twelve phases of play, centre Killian Lett barged over near the posts. Ivan Poole’s conversion levelled matters at 14-14.

Playing with the breeze in the second-half, Enniscorthy went ahead early with a penalty kick from Poole.

Kilkenny struck back immediately with another well-taken try through their backs, with their left winger scoring in the corner.

Their lead was shortlived as the Wexford men dominated proceedings from then on.

Killian Lett scored his second try on 50 minutes, and Enniscorthy were now firmly intent on that all-important bonus point try.

It came on the 65th minute when wing David O’Dwyer climbed highest to catch a speculative kick from Ivan Poole and raced over to score.

With ten minutes remaining, flanker Tom Ryan was at the tail of a driving maul to score their fifth try. Kilkenny never gave up and scored again in the left corner on full-time.

Enniscorthy had big games from Timmy Morrissey, Tom Ryan and Ivan Poole, but none of them matched the man of the match performance from Killian Lett who is in top form this season.

Enniscorthy travel to Limerick next Saturday to play Richmond in the All-Ireland Junior Cup.
