TAGHMON SOCIETY

The ninth annual Purple and Gold Cup between Taghmon Golf Society and The Kilmacud Crokes Golf Society from Dublin took place in the resplendent Woodenbridge Golf Club on Sunday, October 14.

There was no bus this year and therefore no pitstop on the return journey, very disappointing. Everyone made their own way up.

At 8.50 a.m., play started on a fine autumnal day after some heavy rain and storm Callum in the previous days, but the course was fully playable bar the bunkers and in otherwise great order.

Everyone enjoyed their golf, except yours truly by having his head wrecked by a team-mate on the first hole!

A total of 48 players took part but, seeing as we had twelve more players than Kilmacud, there were nine matches in the matchplay and three additional foursomes played for the team prizes only.

Nine groups of four set off in teams of two on a fourball better ball stableford point basis, with each match worth one point to the winning pair on a matchplay basis.

The stableford score was kept to sort out winning teams for everyone. Anyone with a society handicap of over 20 was brought back to that, and everyone else played off of their G.U.I.

The score ended at 5.5 to 3.5, and a worthy victory yet again, making the series now seven games to two in Taghmon’s favour. That was the four-in-a-row.

There was much celebration had afterwards in what is without doubt our most keenly-fought fixture of the year. A good few went back to the homebase of Alice Brady’s pub for a long night of wind ups and slagging.

Our man Tony Kelly, with a foot in both camps as usual, was M.C. and chief organiser for the day, getting everybody out on time; set the alarm clock Rory.

Results (almost a clean sweep): 1, Eddie and Nicholas Cousins (T), 53 (€90) - a competition record, well done lads; 2, Frank Kennedy and Jason White (T), 48 (€70); 3, Paddy Kearney and Barry McGrath (T), 47 (€50); front nine, Mark and Robert Furlong (T), 22, back six (€30); back nine, Edward Cousins and Eamon Roche (T), 24 (€30); nearest the pin: fourth hole, Robert Furlong (T), 8’ (€25); eighth hole, Anthony Wadding (T), 35” (€25); eleventh hole, Kevin Dietrich (KC), 16’ (€25); 17th hole, Seán O’Shea (KC), 13’9” (€25).

Well done and congratulations to all the players who participated because at the end of the day it was indeed a team effort and everyone played their part. Even those who didn’t bring in a point added something to the day.

To those who didn’t travel, you don’t know what you missed. Roll on next year where there might be a change of venue, Powerscourt maybe, we shall see in due course.

Many, many thanks to Tony Kelly for all his behind the scenes work in organising this event once again. After the recent pairing in the Ryder Cup, Moliwood was the buzzword on everyone’s lips but we had our own uber-confident dream team who, alas, couldn’t match the professionals and only managed a win in the back nine; hard luck to Couche!

NEW ROSS SENIORS

The frost cleared early but there was still a heavy dew to contend with on Thursday when we had the biggest number of competitors taking part this year.

Fourteen teams faced the starter and all enjoyed their game in pleasant autumn sunshine. There may be a change in starting times for the winter season after the clock goes back as frosty mornings could contribute to a delay each week - full details next week.

Scoring returns were way down on recent days with little or no run on the ball and players often failing to reach the greens in regulation. However, two teams cracked the 90-point target figure with only one point separating them at the end.

Jimmy Furlong (12), Willie Kelly (19), Seán O hUginn (21) and Larry Shannon (21) were the winners with a score of 92 points.

They edged out Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Pat Traynor (18), Liam Glasheen (21) and Les Jastrebski (25) by the bare minimum.

Third on 89 points came Tony Harford (14), Billy Redmond (19), Frank Boyle (23) and Martin Burke (25).

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Tommy Ryan on the ninth hole and Johnny Hosey on the eleventh.

This will include all outstanding competitions and will also include winners and runners-up of club matchplays, medal winners, player of the year etc.

We are now taking enties for the winter league. For all new members of the club, this is a series of five 14-hole stableford competitions that are run throughout the winter, with two to three before Christmas and the remainder afterwards.

The entry fee is €25 which covers all five, and it should be placed in the men’s competition box with your preferred tee-time and name stated.

We will try as far as possible to ensure that members get as close to their preferred tee-time, but this may not be possible if too many are opting for the same early times.

We are grateful to Hartley’s Autocraft who have come on board to sponsor the winter league.
