Rosslare group toasts triple success in the Tidy Towns
THERE WERE triple celebrations at Coast Hotel in Rosslare Strand as the team behind the village’s Tidy Town group gathered to toast their success in this year’s competition.
The village took home the county prize, a third Bronze Medal and a Sustainable Development Award at the recent ceremony in the Helix. They topped the county table, for the first time, with a total of 322 points.
Chairperson of the group, Eamonn Sreenan paid huge credit and thanks to the core group of volunteers and the two dedicated TUS workers who made the result possible, as well as thanking the Environment Section of Wexford County Council for their generous support. He also thanked the parttime volunteers who donned the volunteer jackets and helped out during their holidays in the village.
In 2017, Rosslare received a Special Value Water Award and Mr Sreenan pointed out how important that was as, in 2018, when drought conditions hit, the village had over 4,000 litres of water saved meaning they had lost virtually no plants or flowers which was a considerable achievement.
He added that, this year, over 30 new and creative projects had been undertaken by the group including the regeneration of the sand dune beside the lifeguard tower which is a three to five year project that will hopefully return the dunes to their original state.
Mr Sreenan added: ‘Tidy Towns is not simply about keeping the village clean and tidy,. In Rosslare we are very aware of the younger generations and we try to encourage them, by example and by involvement, in caring for the Environment. Volunteering is a uniting force that gathers people from all parts of the community and from all backgrounds in order to work for a common purpose that will help create a sustainable community for future generations.’
He added: ‘The awards give us recognition but also the enthusiasm to start all over again and hopefully bring more good news and celebrations to Rosslare in 2019.’
