Bank launched at Transition Year fair

- By ANNA HAYES

THE ENTERPRISING students of St Peter’s College are turning their hand to banking by taking part in the AIB Build A Bank challenge.

A group of six Transition Year students, Moroch O’Flaherty, Gianni Forte, Cillian Boggan, Mark Finucane, Sean Óg Flanagan, and Mark Henebery are aiming to encourage people to set up bank accounts by streamlining the process for signing up for an account. The launch was performed by Cllr George Lawlor, representing Marine Watch and Sally Griffith of Pieta House.

There was brisk business for the newly established bank as interest was very high and they, quickly, ran out of forms for current accounts!

Mark Henebery explained that students could take a form for either a current or savings account, fill it out, and bring in relevant documentation, which the Build A Bank team would then process through a bank representative and return the students’ documents along with a bank card within a week.

‘We want to make setting up an account more accessible for students because it’s hard to find the time to get to the bank to do it while you’re in school.’

The group will take part in the Build A Bank competition in March where they will present their bank’s achievements to date. Mark said they will be doing plenty of promotion of the service in the run-up to Christmas.

The school also held a Transition Year Fair on the day, giving the many Mini Companies of the year the chance to showcase and sell their produce which ranged from woodworks, to clothing, to candles and lamps, and even protein bars and supplements.
