HFC Band ready for Opera House concert

- By ANNA HAYES

MEMBERS OF the Holy Family Confraternity Band will perform at the Jerome Hynes Theatre in the National Opera House this Saturday night at 8 p.m.

The concert will mark another milestone for the band in what has been a great year for them.

A recent award of grant aid under the LEADER Programme 2014-2020 has enabled them to buy seven new instruments including timpani drums, saxophones, trumpets and a French horn.

Many of the new instruments will be played by the junior band will perform on Saturday night, along with the senior band.

In recent times, the band has seen a rapid increase in members, mainly from primary and secondary schools around the county but they have welcomed some new adult members too.

They are very grateful to Scoil Mhuire Coolcotts for providing a rehearsal space and also to Loch Garman Silver Band for making their band room available to them in the last few weeks. They also thanked Wexford Local Development and the council’s Creative Ireland fund.

The band’s musical director is Liam Walsh from Waterford and he has been preparing the band for this concert since they resumed rehearsals in September. The junior band is tutored by Ann Wickham, and Louise Malone will conduct them on the night of the concert.

The repertoire on the night will include music from movies, musicals and many other popular numbers. Tickets are €10 from the Opera House and money raised will go towards the band’s ongoing music programme.

The HFC Concert Band is a community music group based in Wexford Town and facilitates people of all ages who have an interest in playing wind music.

Anyone who can play a wind or brass instrument is more than welcome to join the band.
