Young artists express themselves in contest
BUDDING YOUNG artists enjoyed an evening awards ceremony at Wexford Credit Union for this year’s art competition, an event which was attended by over 100 people.
Children ranging in age from under seven up to 18 took part in the local event which is part of a larger national competition that attracts over 30,000 entries from the 250 credit unions around the country. 2018 marks the 35th year of the event.
The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Forces of Nature’, a theme which left plenty of room for interpretation by the over 500 local entries who took part.
Marketing committee chairman Jos O’Connor said: ‘The annual competition is part of the Irish League of Credit Unions commitment to supporting the artistic development of both young and old in communities throughout Ireland.’
He added that producing and creating art could have many benefits for adults and kids, from reducing stress and aiding the development of creative problem-solving skills, to nurturing fine motor skills and neural development, as well as allowing the expression of emotion.
Mr O’Connor expressed his thanks to all of the schools and parents for their encouragement and interest.
Winners of the local competition go on to the Chapter competition and, from there, to the national competition. Winners at national level will receive cash prizes at an awards ceremony in Croke Park in February 2019 and see their artwork printed in the Credit Union calendar for 2020.
