Mayor’s speech hits right notes with the experts!
AROUND 30 people attended a Mayoral Reception honouring the work of the Wexford Toastmasters’ club which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.
Mayor of Wexford, Cllr Tony Dempsey congratulated the group on their ten years of work, referring in particular to mental health issues and how being part of groups like the Toastmasters could help.
Eddie Cassidy, President of Wexford Toastmasters, spoke about the value of the Toastmasters Club, pointing out that Wexford already had groups in Enniscorthy and Gorey. and saying that it was admirable that the county could sustain three clubs. Two of the club’s founder members, Brian Matthews and Bettie Marie Burger-Smit, also spoke about the establishment of the club.
Following that, seven current members of the club spoke of their own experiences in Toastmasters and how it had helped them: some had joined to improve their English and get feedback; some took part to help with work presentations; others joined simply because of their love of language and public speaking.
Club PRO Gillian Wild said that everyone had joined for different reasons but said the club was also a social outlet.
‘The night was really a celebration of what the founder members had started and what we continued. We are looking to build our club and we’re always open to new members.’
The evening finished with refreshments and food, while the members mingled.
