Even a simple calculator cost most than twice as much as a basic camera back in 1981, according to an advert placed by Carty’s Photo Studio of Market Street, Enniscorth­y, in the run up to Christmas that year.

The advert told how calculator­s were available ‘from £13.75’ - while you could buy an entry-level camera at prices beginning at just £6.50.

Of course, today you’ve just got both calculator and camera on your phone...
