GARDAÍ PROBE ALLEGED SCAM AT TOWN BOOKIES
THE Gardai in Wexford are investigating an attempted fraud that occurred at a betting office in the town just after Christmas.
A spokesperson for the force told this newspaper that on Thursday, December 27, 14 bets were placed in very quick succession - to the value of €4,000 - in an attempt to confuse the cashier.
The incident occurred at 7.50 p.m. at a wellknown betting office in Wexford town. The matter is now being investigated.
‘Slow count’ fraud is a well-known scam which has been around for many years but with modern computerised systems it was thought that it had come to an end.
The rapid-fire questions and bets are aimed at distracting the cashier to ensure that the race or races on which bets are actuially being placed are over before the cash is handed over.
