Wexford People

More than 200 dinners served!

- By BRENDAN KEANE

AN ANNUAL DINNER event organised by the community support organisation Wexford People Helping People was a resounding success with over 200 dinners being served to members of the public from St Joseph’s Community Centre.

The dinners were prepared by chef Jimmy Barry and his team and were handed out to around 80 people in attendance while the remaining meals were sent to people in their homes or served to guests at the event.

In keeping with the festive season Santa Claus and Mrs Claus were on hand to give out presents to younger people before returning to the North Pole for a well earned rest after their very busy Christmas period.

Two members of Corner Boy, Michael D’Arcy and Matthew O’Brien, entertained the crowd and received a great response with people joining in, dancing and singing to some well known tunes.

Another aspect of the event was the provision of 150 hampers by the WPHP organisation to families in need and the organisation also provided emergency coal.

The WPHP committee is composed of chairperson Gary O’Brien and members Claire Malone, Sinéad Griffin, Declan Reck, Kevin Mellin and Deirdre Mellin.

A spokesperson for the committee thanked all of the volunteers who helped out on the day and a special word of thanks was conveyed to chef Jimmy Barry and his team, people within the local community, and Richard Culleton, the manager of St Joseph’s, for their support and help in making the event a success.

Declan Reck is a well known concert and event promoter and it was the second time he was involved in the initiative. Once again he was very successful in getting members of the Wexford business community involved as sponsors along with TDs, councillors and gardaí.

The WPHP organisation was founded by Claire Byrne a couple of years ago and in the interim has grown in terms of how it assists and supports people.

One of the plans in the pipeline for 2019 is the introduction of trips away to tourist sites around Ireland for people who are alone or are in need.
