Death of All-Ireland winner Power
WEXFORD G.A.A. lost another former All-Ireland medal winner with the death of Seán Power last week.
The former journalist and public relations consultant died in Cork following a short illness.
A native of Waterford, and a highly-talented sportsman, Seán will be remembered for the role he played in Wexford’s shock 1960 All-Ireland Senior hurling final victory over Tipperary when the Model county came out on top by 2-15 to 0-11.
He hurled in Wexford when based as a journalist in the county before going on to work with ‘The Irish Press’ and ‘The Irish Independent’.
Having moved to Dublin to work as a political correspondent, he later became Chairman of the Oireachtas Press Association.
He re-located from Dublin to Cork in the late 1960s where he worked as the southern correspondent with ‘The Irish Independent’. He then left to form his own firm, Power Communications, which became very successful.
While Seán won an All-Ireland medal with Wexford in 1960, coming on as a second-half replacement for Seamus Quaid, before being subsequently replaced himself by Mick Morrissey, his brother, Seamus, had helped Waterford to All-Ireland success in 1959.
Wexford G.A.A. followers in the county extend their sympathy to his wife Mary, children and extended family.
