Meanscoil’s young scientists make their mark at the RDS

STUDENTS from Meanscoil Gharman outside Enniscorth­y and Creagh College in Gorey were among the winners in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS in Dublin.

Conn Caomhánach and Con Ó Meachair from Meanscoil Gharman came second in the Biological and Ecological Senior Group category with their project investigat­ing the biological benefits of E.M. probiotics in agricultur­e.

Creagh College students Charlotte Gray and Lauren Paisley were highly commended in the Chemical, Physical and Mathematic­al Sciences Junior Group category for their work in quantifyin­g the antioxidan­t levels in wheatgrass juice to determine its suitabilit­y for preventing diseases caused by free radicals produced in the body.

Three County Wexford schools flew the flag for County Wexford in the annual event with the FCJ Bunclody students also selected to compete with a slurry gas alarm for dogs called ‘Madralert’.

Four projects were accepted from Meanscoil Garman including the winning entry from Conn Caohmánach and Con Ó Meachair who were competing for the second year.

The pair continued their research at Teagasc in Johnstown Castle, examining the benefits of EM probiotics in agricultur­e.

Two projects from Creagh College were in contention at the exhibition.
