Bus windscreen smashed as it passes through Oylegate

-

GARDAÍ are investigating an incident where a group pelted the windscreen of a Bus Eireann bus with rocks as it passed through Oylegate in the early hours of yesterday (Monday) morning.

The incident took place just on the Wexford side of the village at approximately 2.20 a.m.

The bus was travelling back to Wexford from Dublin airport and it is believed that the driver may have been on his own on-board when the incident occurred. He reported seeing ‘a number of people’ standing on the side of the road before they unleashed a barrage of rocks at the windscreen, smashing it in a couple of different places.

Enniscorthy Gardaí are taking the matter extremely seriously and an investigation is ongoing.

‘I haven’t seen anything like it in a long time,’ a garda spokesman said. ‘This is something that could have been quite serious. If a bus that size went out of control and collided with an oncoming car...someone could have been killed.’

It is believed that there may be onboard CCTV footage of the incident and, at the time of going to print, it was being downloaded for examination by gardaí.

Anyone in the area that may have witnessed the attack or may have any information is asked to contact Enniscorthy Garda Station on 053 9242580. Similarly Bus Eireann are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, stating that the incident could have had very serious implications for staff and customers.
