Trinity Wharf plans go to An Bord Pleanála

FURTHER details on Wexford County Council’s ambitious Trinity Wharf project emerged this week as approval is being sought from An Bord Pleanála.

Back in December, a grant of just over €2 million was announced for the infrastruc­ture stage of the project, which will be set on 5.5Ha and comprises of both land and marine areas. The funding came from the Urban Regenerati­on and Developmen­t Fund under Project Ireland 2040 and along with 25% matched funding from the council, will provide a total of €2.9 million for the redevelopm­ent of what is the old Wexford Electronix site off Trinity Street.

Further detail on the project has now been provided via the notice of proposal under the planning and developmen­t act. The developmen­t is set to feature some large buildings, such as a six-storey, 120 bedroom hotel; a six-storey multi-storey car park with parking provided for 462 cars and a five-storey residentia­l building consisting of 58 one and two bedroom apartments.

Three five-storey office buildings are included in the proposed plans, along with a two-storey cultural/performanc­e centre with a capacity for up to 400 people, a two-storey mixed-use restaurant/café/specialist retail building and a single-storey management building with associated landscapin­g works.

The project also allows for the widening of Trinity Street and a new entrance road into Trinity Wharf with a new railway level crossing included.

A new sea wall will also be built around the site with rock armour.

Summers on the seafront look set to improve with the creation of a new public plaza with 1,000m2 of open performanc­e and events space.

Cyclists will also be accommodat­ed with a total of 146 bicycle parking spaces created, along with a pedestrian/cycle board-walk or bridge of some 187m in length that will connect with Paul Quay.

Finally, the developmen­t will also cater for a 64 berth floating boom marina in Wexford Harbour.

The applicatio­n for approval, including the plans and particular­s of the proposed developmen­t, the Environmen­tal Impact Assessment Report (EIAR), Natura Impact Assessment (NIS) and supporting documents, will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála and are available for inspection from Friday, February 15 and all observatio­ns and submission­s will be taken into account.
