€25,000 allocated for crossings at the Loreto
FOLLOWING significant pressure from parents of students at the new Loreto Secondary, funding has finally been granted for the installation of pedestrian crossings on the busy road outside the school.
The situation at the school, which caters for some 800 students, proved chaotic almost immediately after opening as each evening students attempted to cross the busy R733 and parents blasted the situation as ‘an accident waiting to happen’.
Last week, however, it was confirmed that funding of €25,000 had been made available for the construction of proper pedestrian crossings outside the school in a bid to make things safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Cllr George Lawlor was among the voices calling for action to be taken on the matter and he was delighted to see the funding allocated.
‘This issue has been there since before the pupils even entered the school,’ he said.
‘It was imperative to put something in place when some 800 students and staff are emerging from there every day onto the R733 which is one of the busiest roads in the county.’
It’s important that every possible safety measure is put in place and I’m delighted to see that this funding has been secured.’
Cllr Lawlor also pointed out that current ongoing parking difficulties at the school are set to be eased with the opening of the new Min Ryan Park later this year, which will include some 70 spaces that can be utilised by parents at collection time.
