Walsh seeks place on FG ticket in the local elections

- By MARIA PEPPER

FORMER newspaper editor Ger Walsh has confirmed that he is bidding for a place on the Fine Gael ticket in the forthcoming local elections.

‘I have been in discussions with senior Fine Gael officials and local party members over recent months with a view to running for the party in the new Wexford Borough District’, he said. The selection convention has been fixed for March 1 and he expects his name to go before delegates on that date.

Walsh spent a long career in journalism, including a decade as editor of the Wexford People Group before moving to senior management at Independent News and Media.

He was a founding director of Beat radio station. Following his departure from INM, he established The Chronicle free newspaper which he sold last year. A native of Taghmon, he has lived in Wexford town for many years.

‘I have always had a keen interest in politics and local government and my role in the media over the years brought me into close contact with the workings of all aspects of the local authority.

‘I believe my life experiences in journalism and business could be put to use in a positive way at local authority level.’, he said of his decision.

‘If you want to achieve things for Wexford Borough District, being part of the Fine Gael team of public representatives in the county is the best place to do it’, he said, adding that he is also impressed by Leo Varadkar’s ‘modern, inclusive’ leadership of the country.
