New defibrillator installed on wall of village supermarket
A POTENTIALLY life-saving piece of equipment was officially unveiled in Rosslare Harbour last week as a brand new defibrillator took pride of place on the wall outside of Murphy’s SuperValu.
The equipment is the latest in a string of ongoing projects that have been undertaken by the Rosslare Harbour Kilrane Village Development Team. The group was formed in a bid to foster a greater sense of community in the villages and ensure they fulfil their full potential.
‘Basically we’re looking to progress the villages,’ said PRO for the group Sean Boyce.
‘They have been in decline for quite a while. A couple of months ago we had a meeting to unveil plans and we asked people to submit a wish-list of things, big and small, that they would like to see to improve the place. One thing which came up again and again was a defibrillator.’
Local councillor Ger Carthy kindly agreed to sponsor the lifesaving equipment from his municipal allocation, while Chairman of the development team Alan Murphy sponsored the cabinet it is stored in.
In total, the equipment cost somewhere in the region of €2,000. The item has pride of place on the wall at Murphy’s SuperValu now and anyone in need can ring 999, where an operator will give them a code and instruct them on the use of the equipment. ‘This is potentially life-saving,’ said Sean. ‘Even if it saved just one life or helped just one person who’s in difficulty, then it really is worth its weight in gold and it’ll have paid for itself.’
