Thieves hit store again

-

THOUSANDS of euros in damage has been incurred by a Campile supermarket’s owners after their business was ransacked and burgled on Sunday - for the second time in a few years.

Hayes Daybreak in Campile was broken into through an upstairs rear window early on Sunday morning. Once they got inside they deactivated the alarm using a blocker.

The thieves caused extensive damage to the ceiling and premises during the raid.

Celine Hayes Barrett, who runs the supermarket with her husband Neil, said they did not see the damage until Sunday afternoon as they had closed the shop that day for the first time in six months.

‘It was just a mess with stuff all over the place. All the roof tiles were damaged. They were a sophisticated crowd.’

Cash, cigarettes and food – along with the CCTV recorders - were stolen in the raid at the popular supermarket, which was broken into and ransacked a few years ago. ‘Now we’re faced with all the cost of everything again. Our camera system was completely ransacked so we’ll have to make an insurance claim which will drive up our insurance,’ Celine said.

Celine and Neil employ seven staff at Hayes Daybreak.

Sergeant Eddie Wilde said: ‘We are looking for any information about anyone acting suspiciously in the area. Even small amounts of information can be helpful. We don’t have to be sure they are the people who carried this out.’

It is understood gardaí have been furnished with some information as to who the culprits are, but they are appealing for anybody with knowledge of who was responsible to contact them on 051 426030.
