A PROUD TRADITION CONTINUES
HAVING overseen thrills and adventures for hundreds of young people since it’s beginnings just over 40 years ago, the 25th Wexford Scout Group in Piercestown continued a proud tradition as they hosted their annual investiture on Tuesday.
The group got off to a strong start with eight leaders in two sections with 80 young people taking part and scouting continues to provide adventure, entertainment and education for the youngsters of the local area to this day. The club has won quite a few awards and competitions over the years, including the County Shield competition an unbelievable six years in a row!
Perhaps the biggest part of scouting is the camps and over the years the group has travelled to camps all over Ireland, onto Achill Island, North Wales and Scotland. Starting out with Beavers (6-8), kids progress to Cubs (9-12), before graduating to Scouts (12-15), where they use explorer Tom Crean as the basis for their activities. Training for adults is also provided by Scouting Ireland.
County Commissioner Dano O’Leary arrived at the investiture last week to renew the promises by cubs and formally invest leaders, scouts and beavers into the various sections. In total, four Scouts, six Cubs and nine Beavers were welcomed to the group and the boys also received a variety of badges. Terra Nova and Endurance awards were handed out to Guard of Honour scouts Luke Turner and Ciaran O’Connor and the County Commissioner also presented the 25th Wexford Piercestown Group with the SQS Excellence Award.
The group currently has big plans for weekend camps for 2019 and new members are always welcome. Registration takes place tonight (Tuesday) at 7.30 p.m. and all are welcome.
