Dumpers cause an eyesore near train tracks

-

OLD beds, black bags full of household waste, clothes and even an electric lawnmower were among the items found discarded without thought on the shoreline just past Maudlintown. The mess was spotted just off the train tracks before the Danone plant by local photographer Ray Connolly, who subsequently captured it.

Having been sent the photos, Cllr Leonard Kelly contacted the council’s clean up crew and asked that the matter be dealt with as a matter of urgency. He said that it was hugely disappointing, given the hard work that’s being done in the south end of town by groups like Wexford Tidy Towns and the Clean Coasts Group.

‘I am beginning to get more reports of illegal dumping,’ a concerned Cllr Kelly said. ‘A lot of great groups have been doing great work there and there had only been a clean up there a little while back. At this stage, I will be checking to see if it’s a possibility to install some kind of surveillance or CCTV cameras there.’

‘Ultimately, we could have tourists and visitors to Wexford passing this by train and it’s not something we want to show off. We have a great facility for disposing of waste out at Holmestown and it’s not expensive. I would also ask people to be mindful of using waste disposal services advertised online, to make sure that they have the correct licence and are disposing of your waste in the correct manner, otherwise, it could be you who is liable for a fine.’
