Our garden is now our safe haven

-

AS a result of Covid-19 restrictions, we’ve been forced to look at what’s on our own doorstep with fresh eyes. With the guidelines restricting how far we can move from our homes, many of us have been trying to make the best of a bad situation and enjoy what we have. For those of us lucky enough to have a garden, what we may previously have viewed as just a patch of grass is now our haven and holiday destination all rolled into one.

So let’s face it, jetting off on a foreign holiday this summer is now extremely unlikely to happen. While our suitcases may remain mournfully in the back of the press, it’s not all doom and gloom. In recent weeks, we’ve seen some of the very best of the famous ‘Sunny South East’ weather and while it may not be Spain or Portugal, the timing has never been better to get out in the back garden.

So why not spend a little of the holiday fund on transforming your back garden into an ideal destination for the rest of the summer. Thankfully, as part of phase one of the planned re-opening of the country, garden centres across Co Wexford have been able to re-open their doors and welcome back customers. Good timing too! With little investment, you can see your back garden transformed from a shabby patch of grass into an ideal oasis, perfect for summer barbecues and socially distanced drinks with family and friends. A few finely positioned plants and a little bit of TLC can go a long way in creating an ideal space for your summer staycation.

As well as finding all the items you’ll need from weed-killer to potted plants, at Wexford’s garden centres you’ll also find a wealth of experience from staff who will be more than happy to help you find your inner green-fingered God or Goddess. Some new garden furniture could be just the ticket and with it coming in all shapes and sizes and to suit all budgets in this day and age, there’ll be something for everyone. In addition you just can’t beat a garden barbecue and many of your local garden centres will be able to help you on this front too.

So don’t spend your time mourning the sun holiday that never was. Use this time to create your own little back garden oasis and make the most of a summer at home.
