Cushie on the double in Dublin

-

THERE IS some good news for greyhound owners and trainers this week as Waterford track will be running an extra meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

The demand for racing is high in the south-east, so the extra twelve races will be a welcome addition.

There was plenty of Co. Wexford runners again this past week, and some good wins were recorded in Shelbourne Park.

The highlight came on Saturday night when the Seán Corrigan (Co. Carlow)-owned Right So Belle continued her great form when taking heat six, the first round of the Best Car Parks Gold Cup Open.

She took up the running off the second bend and ran on strongly to score by four lengths in a fast 28.49. It was her eighth career success and this was one of her best.

Enniscorthy owners John Codd and Diana Brodie also had a great night, taking the last two races with Cushie Wayne and Cushie Spirit.

With both having filled the runner-up spot in the previous week, they both made no mistake this time around.

Wayne recorded a fine 28.58 in race eleven, wearing down the long-time leader Sunshine Hero to get up in the closing stages.

Spirit put in a dazzling display over the 575 yards trip in race twelve, breaking well and always in total control to race home a clear six lengths to the good in a fast 31.07.

On Friday night the Paul Ryan-owned Tip Top Taylor gave the Gorey owner a nice win in race four, when tracking the leaders down to the third bend before making his forward move.

He went level off the last bend and out-battled long-time leader Highview Joker close to the line to score by a neck in a good 28.93.

Thursday morning’s SIS meeting at Waterford saw five Co. Wexford winners.

In race eight the Helen Morris (Rosslare Harbour)-owned Trap Seven Jade put in a fine effort after a good win the previous week.

She was stepping up two grades but it proved no bother to her as she popped out well from traps and was in front all the way to the line, scoring by a length in a good 29.19 at the generous odds of 8/1. Helen’s husband, Vincent Morris, is the trainer.

The Eleanor Turner (Enniscorthy)-owned Bob The Cooper got things off to a flyer in race one, leading everywhere and coming home a clearcut four and a half lengths to the good in a time of 29.33.

Race two saw the turn of Foulksmills owner Martin Sullivan as his Carock Ellie, who disputed things up front, showed good guts to go between runners on the run to the opening corner and get into a good challenging position before taking control by the third bend. Ellie came home a good winner in a time of 29.59.

Tomahurra Lucky was a comfortable winner of race four for owner Elaine Kehoe (Enniscorthy).

After leading up and hugging the rail all the way, Lucky ran out a winner by five lengths in a time of 29.35 for trainer Donal Kehoe.

Race seven saw a good run from Whizzing Beryl as she went between runners approaching the first bend and took a knock but forced herself onwards to take up the running off the second bend.

Beryl raced to a fine win by three lengths in a time of 29.33 for owner Margaret Cullen from New Ross.
