Nancy was a devoted and proud mother
THERE was great sadness recently in the Clonroche area with the passing of Nancy Harris, Castleboro, on Monday, December 28, peacefully in her 98th year.
Nancy was born on June 3, 1923 to parents William and Mary Murray, Tinraheen, the Ballagh, and was the eldest of five children: Mary, Eileen, Johnnie, and the late Bud (Sr. Michelle).
Nancy had numerous interests in her youth, and was an accomplished Irish Dancer and a member of the Glenagark Mummers. She also played camogie with the Coolgarrow Camogie Club.
Bicycle racing was another of Nancy’s passions at which she excelled, winning numerous competitions near and far.
In 1944 Nancy commenced training as a Psychiatric Nurse in St. Senan’s Hospital, Enniscorthy. where she remained working until 1958 when she married her beloved Parkey, and moved to Castleboro.
Nancy quickly settled into her new life in Castleboro, and soon became renowned for her beautiful garden.
Nancy was also a member of the Castleboro Tops Group, and along with her husband Parky trained the Cloughbawn/Adamstown Camogie Team that won the Junior County Championship in 1976.
Nancy also loved playing cards, and the highlight of her week for many years was the Tuesday night card games she played with friends.
Nancy, Parkey, and their daughter Eilish enjoyed a happy and content life until Parkey’s untimely death in 1977.
Nancy was a proud, and devoted mother and grandmother, having a strong and unique bond with each of her five grandchildren and great granddaughter, she knew each of their mobile telephone numbers from memory, and spoke almost daily to each of them by phone.
Birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and other major events in their lives were never forgotten.
Nancy was also a loyal and true friend to many, and the esteem she was held in was to be seen by the large crowd of neighbours and friends that stood outside her residence and along the route as her funeral cortege made its way to St. Clements Church, Cloughbawn for her funeral mass, and burial.
May She Rest in Peace.
Nancy will be sadly missed by her daughter Eilish, son in Law J.P., grandchildren Padraig, Barry, Austin, James, Melanie, and great granddaughter Aria, sisters, brother, relatives, and friends.
