Columbian writer to give Kilmore masterclass
The award-winning Columbian author Jorge Franco, will deliver the first 2021 masterclass organised by Write by the Sea literary festival in Kilmore Quay, on Saturday, March 13.
Appearing on the Zoom Room to Write series, Jorge will explain how his native Columbia influences his approach to his characters, themes and narrative voice and will encourage workshop participants to explore the impact of their own place of origin on their writing.
Jorge was born in the city of Medellín, Colombia. He studied Film Direction at London International Film School and literature at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Columbia.
‘Maldito Amor (Damned Love) was his first book of short stories and ‘Mala Noche’ (Bad Night) his first novel, both of which received prestigious national awards.
Subsequent novels including ‘Rosario Tijeras’ (Rosario of the Scissors, 1999), Paraíso Travel (Paradise Travel, 2002) and ‘Melodrama’ (2006) confirmed his reputation as one of the most promising new Latin American writers.
His 2014 novel ‘El Mundo De Afuero’ (The World Outside) won one of the most prestigious awards in the Spanish language while ‘El Cielo A Tiros (Shooting Down Heaven, 2018) has been hailed as his most accomplished work to date.
His books have been translated into English, French, Italian and Turkish and have been developed into films and TV series.
The acclaimed Columbian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez who died in 2014, said he was ‘one of the Columbian authors to whom I would like to pass the torch’ while the Wall Stree Journal said his work is helping to redraw the map of Latin American literature.
