Councillors get hot and steamy over bye-laws

-

WE may all be looking for ways to stay warm during these winter months but a session in a portable sauna has been beyond most of our means.

However, that was exactly what was on offer for Cllr Jim Codd during February’s meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD).

Discussing the possibility of introducing casual trading bye-laws in the district thus allowing retailers to set up mobile premises in agreed areas, Cllr Ger Carthy said he knew of an individual who wished to set up a mobile sauna in the Carne area.

Cllr Jim Codd knew of someone who had a mobile coffee van which would also provide people with a valuable outlet during times of isolation.

‘He can trade in inclement weather and it provides an outlet for people, somewhere for them to go,’ said Cllr Codd. ‘The mobile sauna might be more of a fine weather option.’

Eager to convince his colleague of the benefits of an hour in the sauna, Cllr Carthy replied, ‘I’ll put you down for an appointment.’

This suggestion did not sit well with Cllr Lisa McDonald however, who admitted the image of Cllr Codd in a sauna was ‘not going to leave me for the day’.

Meanwhile, the Fianna Fáil councillor reiterated her desire to see the two car parks at Forth Mountain, Skeeter and Pennylanes, be utilised by local businesses.

‘We’re probably looking at another summer of domestic tourism, to that end we need a decision on casual trading prior to then,’ she said. ‘As I’ve mentioned before there are two car parks on the Forth Mountain which are in our district, the Skeeter one and the Pennylanes, they would be good options for temporary licenses.’

Confirming that they would be issuing licenses in time for the summer period, District Manager Nóirín Cummins asked councillors to submit proposed locations in time for the next meeting so that Executive Engineer, Mark Collins, could check their suitability.
