Murphy’s busy in London

-

ALTHOUGH THERE is no on-field activity in London, the Fr. Murphy’s camogie and ladies’ football club are very busy, albeit in a virtual capacity.

Every year for the last eight years, club members have carried the county flags at the St. Patrick’s Day parade, but unfortunately there won’t be one this year due to the pandemic.

However, there are several digital events, including the Mayor of London’s celebration, Le Chéile Londáin. As part of this, the club have organised a virtual 5k run on March 21.

About 80 people are signed up already to do the run. All will be in beautiful jerseys produced specially for the event by Bodibro of Wexford.

The proceeds are going to support the club’s nurses and healthcare workers, by covering their 2021 professional registration fees. Healthcare workers are going through a torrid time at present, working minimum twelve-hour shifts for meagre salaries and then having to pay registration out of that.

The club would like to thank its main sponsor, Clonakilty Black Pudding, who have been brilliant to them, and also Ground Construction, Ardent Tide, Aidan Brady, Club Rossie, and Moloney’s Bar Greenford, who have already stepped up to support this event.

You can follow progress on this through the club’s Facebook page, Fr Murphy’s Camogie & Ladies Football Club.

Seamus Casey of the Wexford Senior hurling panel has a big connection with the club, as his grandfather, uncles, mother and father all played and were involved in running the club. He has provided a great video message in support of this.

Club officials are appealing for donations from any com- panies that can assist. They will put each advertisement in the run brochure for £120 per page (this is the amount a nurse has to pay for registration).

Anyone who wants to make an individual donation can do so through https://gofund.me/36ef7439. The page is entitled Fr Murphy’s Support for our health Workers.

The club also runs a weekly lottery, every Sunday night. The current jackpot is £3,000 with two lucky dip prizes. You can play this through https://play. clubforce.com/play_newa.asp?ll_id=1971.

The club is grateful to its lottery sponsor, Mount Anvil Homes, for their very generous help with this venture.

The hurling club is quiet at the moment but a lot of work is going on behind the scenes to ensure a safe return to play.

Congratulations to Seán Howlin on being elected the Irish and Cultural Officer for the London County Board of the GAA. Seán is now busy forming his committee and preparing for when we are able to run functions again.

The youth hurling club has about one hundred children signed up, and before lockdown there were some fantastic hurlers being developed. Martin Harrell is working tirelessly to roll out the sessions as soon as it is safe to do so.

Anyone wishing to contact the club, players in any code, or supporters, can do so by emailing frmurphysladies@ gmail.com, through Facebook, on Linkedin @fr_murphys, or by calling Larry O’Leary on 00 44 7944178879.

The club hopes everyone keeps safe and well and looks forward to meeting on the playing fields when it is safe to proceed. Le Chéile - together we will shine through this.
