County Covid figures lacking
WHILE we were all encouraged to remember that Covid-19 does not take a break before making any plans for the Easter weekend, it seems there was certainly a break in the reporting the numbers, as no county-by-county breakdown of new Covid cases was provided on Saturday or Sunday. It results in a rather unclear picture of how Wexford performed last week – one which had seen mixed fortunes up to the weekend.
We started last week with 8 cases on Monday and 10 on Tuesday before a notable escalation saw 25 new cases confirmed on Wednesday. However, this dropped back to 11 on Thursday and there was good news on Friday as the model county recorded less than five, before it was radio silence for the bank holiday weekend.
The HSE, however, continued to publish it’s daily figures relating to Wexford General Hospital, where there has been no great change in the situation and things remain in quite a positive position. The latest figures at the time of going to print show 5 people hospitalised and one in critical care.
Last week’s breakdown of cases by local electoral area made for some interesting reading.
While it has seen among the lowest rates of Covid-19 thus far, the Wexford Borough District saw the largest increase in the two week period from March 16 to 29 with 50 new cases. Somewhat strangely, Gorey, Kilmuckridge and New Ross Districts all recorded exactly the same amount of cases over that fortnight, 33, and it also represented the second week in a row where Gorey and Kilmuckridge had the same number of cases.
Meanwhile, Rosslare saw 31 new cases and Enniscorthy went from being the county’s worst hit area to best in class with 29 cases.
