Relay for Life seeks out cancer survivors to become VIP guests at 2024 event

- BY PÁDRAIG BYRNE

RELAY for Life Wexford is an event that fulfils many functions. It can be cathartic for those who’ve lost loved ones to cancer to gather in a warm and welcoming environment to remember them, speak to others who have endured similar losses and undertake their own personal pilgrimage while raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

However, there is also the flip side. Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of Relay for Life Wexford is the involvement of survivors. Those who’ve looked cancer in the eye and come out the other side. These people offer hope, inspiration and practical advice for those who are carrying the heavy burden of their own cancer diagnosis.

Once again, survivors will play a central part at this year’s event, taking place at the Faythe Harriers pitch on June 29 and 30, and registration is now open for survivors interested in playing a part.

“At Relay For Life Wexford, survivors are the backbone of our event,” said Julie Jackson Chairperson at Relay For Life Wexford. “Their presence serves as a testament to the unconquerable strength of the human spirit”. We are thrilled to introduce our Survivor chairs for 2024, Jennifer O’Connor and Aaron Morris, who will ensure our survivors are cherished and empowered throughout the event.

“The survivor’s lunch provides a wonderful opportunity for attendees to connect and support one another, fostering a sense of camaraderie that is invaluable on the journey to healing.”

Once again, the team at Relay for Life Wexford wished to thank Pettitt’s SuperValu St Aidan’s, who they say are “instrumental in ensuring that survivors receive the quality experience they deserve at Relay for Life Wexford”.

In the build up to the big day, Relay for Life Wexford will share inspiring survivors’ stories through its blog, highlighting the incredible strength and resilience of individuals who have faced cancer.

Essential to the success of this huge event, which has raised over €1 million for the Irish Cancer Society since its inception, are volunteers.

People are encouraged to get involved and lend a hand where they can, whether its setting up, serving lunch or assisting with any number of other tasks, each contribution is invaluable towards ensuring the continued success of this event.
