Making the decision to look at nursing homes or care options is never an easy one

-

LIFE can move fast and eventually things feel like they come full circle. Naturally, as we move towards our twilight years, we require a change of thinking, a change of pace and a change in how we look after both ourselves and those we love who are moving on in life.

Making the decision to look at nursing homes or care options is never an easy one. We all strive to hang onto our independence, but equally, sometimes we all need a helping hand. That’s not to say that you or your parent, grandparent or loved one need to stop doing the normal things that make the days enjoyable, but rather it can be easier, safer and provide a better quality of life by looking at care options.

Equally, it can be tough for family members to take that step and reach out for help. It’s never an easy conversation to have. Helping another person to choose a nursing home or make other long term care choices can be difficult and your support during this change is vital.

Caring for the elderly is often down to the personal circumstances in which you find yourself. If your parent or grandparent, aunt or uncle is getting to a stage where an added bit of care is needed, examine the extent to which such care needs to go and importantly, what the elderly person in question would like.

For many, remaining in one’s home is a necessary and fundamental requirement. We all have our own routines and habits in our own home, and to upset that on an elderly person can be a major thing to do. If they are able to remain at home, and want to do so, but need an added bit of help and care, then you should try to facilitate that by examining options available in home care such as home help, community nurses and so on.

There is also the option of finding a place in a comfortable care setting, be it a nursing home or perhaps a local retirement village. These facilities can provide more care on a more regular basis and provide all the services required.

In recent years, Co Wexford has seen a massive growth in top quality nursing homes, care services and retirement communities that might even provide you or your loved one with a new lease of life.

Many options around the county offer a real sense of community and offer great companionship and a social element with all kinds of activities taking place throughout the week.

If a nursing home or retirement community is the right decision for your family, then its well worth taking the time to examine some of the wonderful facilities that exist right on our doorstep. Take some time to evaluate all of the options and find the best fit for you or your loved one. A visit can really help make your mind up, as you’ll quickly get a feel for each place and the staff that work there. It will also give you some sense of what the daily routine holds and it will put a lot of your concerns to bed.

It’s important not to be afraid to ask questions. Inevitably, this is a big decision and staff members will be more than happy to address all concerns and queries and they’ll have heard them all before.

Whatever the needs of the elderly person in your life, be sure to take their needs and concerns into consideration and come to a decision that will benefit them most. The right course of action can ensure a better quality of life for him or her and allow them to fully enjoy their later years in the company of family and friends.
