Wexford Golf Club helps trees project pass milestone

- By SIMON BOURKE

WEXFORD Golf Club was the venue for the final tree planting project of this season’s One Hundred Million Trees Project. This national initiative seeks to foster environmental sustainability and combat climate change by densely planting between 1,000 and 2,500 native Irish trees at a time across small areas of land.

Having set itself a target of 200,000 trees in its 2023/24 planting season, organisers reached that milestone at Wexford Golf Club last week. That figure is a tenfold increase from the previous year, where 20,000 trees were planted across 18 sites. Looking ahead, the One Hundred Million Trees Project (100 MTP) is poised to continue its upward trajectory, with plans to surpass the half-million mark next year, targeting 550,000 trees across 230 sites.

Spearheaded by brothers Richard and David Mulcahy and sister Tina, the 100MTP team expressed their profound gratitude and excitement for the accomplishments of this season. Richard Mulcahy stated, “We are so incredibly proud of what we have achieved in just our second year of operation. This season’s success comes down to the dedication and hard work of our team, by this time next year we will hopefully have 770,000 trees planted in total, which would be a truly magnificent achievement.”

Ian Thomas, Joint Management Committee member of Wexford Golf Club, said, “We were truly delighted to have been chosen as the location to mark the culmination of the 2023/24 planting season by the 100 Million Trees Project. It’s a joy to know that 5,000 new trees were planted here today. This project really underlines the capacity for ordinary people to make an extraordinary difference in trying to improve our environment and combat the effects of climate change and Wexford Golf Club is delighted to play its part.”

Special guest at the planting ceremony was veteran meteorologist and Wexford man Gerald Fleming, who commended the One Hundred Million Trees Project for its impactful contributions to environmental conservation. “It’s truly inspiring to see the commitment and dedication of everyone involved in this project. Trees can play such a crucial role in mitigating climate change and preserving our planet’s biodiversity. The fantastic efforts of the One Hundred Million Trees Project are a tremendous example of community spirit and really demonstrate what can be achieved through collective action.”
