Star golfer Joseph to play UK and Europe
Joseph Byrne, the star junior member of Baltinglass Golf Club, from Spynans, has been picked by the Golfing Union of Ireland to compete in two important events during July. These are not official internationals (he has already represented Ireland at under-16s this year) but the experience will be a great boost.
On July 17 to July 19 he competes along with six other Irish boys in the McGregor Trophy in England. Then he travels to Norway for the (under-16s) European Young Masters on July 26 to July 29.
This is a great achievement, as each nation can nominate just two boys and two girls. There are 27 nations taking part, with separate boys’ and girls’ individual stroke play competitions and an overall team prize. Sergio Garcia won the boys’ section in 1995 and Rory McIlroy was runner-up in 2003 in this same competition.
