Donard station to reopen in January

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS - By DEBORAH COLEMAN

DONARD Garda Station is expected to reopen in January following refurbishment works.

Refurbishment works started at the station last week and Deputy John Brady said he had received a commitment that the rural station would reopen in January.

While he welcomed the news for Donard, Deputy Brady called for Hollywood Garda Station to be reopened as a priority to deter crime in rural areas.

He said that having local stations in isolated areas is vital to small communities.

‘The closure of Donard and Hollywood Garda stations in West Wicklow reduced Garda visibility and made rural communities vulnerable to crime,’ he said.

‘This contributed too many older people feeling vulnerable in their homes, particularly those in isolated areas. A decision on what resources will be deployed in the reopened station still needs to be taken.’

‘Whilst I’m glad the government have done a U-turn on the closure of Donard Garda station, they must now do the same in relation with the decision to close Donard Post Office which is due to happen in January,’ he added.
