Gardaí launch road safety campaign over Christmas
THE Garda Christmas and New Year Road Safety Campaign was launched recently and will be implemented in the Baltinglass Garda District as part of The National Roads Policing Operation in December 2018 and January 2019.
The main focus of the operation will be on driving while intoxicated while also focussing on the key lifesaver offences such as speeding, the use of hand-held mobile phones and the non wearing of seatbelts.
The Gardai in the Baltinglass Garda District which includes the towns of Dunlavin, Blessington, Tinahely, Shillelagh and Carnew will be mounting a number of Mandatory Intoxication Checkpoints (MITS) every day from now until the New Year. These checkpoints allow for Gardai to randomly test people for alcohol and drugs at checkpoints. The Checkpoints will be conducted throughout the day ‘The Gardai urge people to plan their night out and not to drink and drive. It is also important for people to plan appropriately for following morning if intending to drive as they may still have alcohol in their system. We wish everyone a safe Christmas on our roads,’ said Sgt Brian Foley, Roads Policing Unit, Baltinglass.
