Five dis­trict pro­jects short­listed as fi­nal­ists

FIVE com­mu­nity ini­tia­tives from within the Wick­low Dis­trict have been short­listed as fi­nal­ists in the 2019 All Ire­land Com­mu­nity and Coun­cil Awards.

Now in their 13th year, the Awards aim to cel­e­brate and recog­nise Coun­cils and com­mu­ni­ties work­ing to­gether while also bring­ing na­tional recog­ni­tion to achieve­ments that would oth­er­wise go un­no­ticed.

Wick­low Mu­nic­i­pal Dis­trict suc­cess­fully nom­i­nated all five. The Volvo Round Ire­land Yacht Race is hosted by Wick­low Sail­ing Club ev­ery two years and is con­sid­ered one of the world’s top off­shore sail­ing races. The Round Ire­land has been nom­i­nated in the cat­e­gory Best Tourism Ini­tia­tive.

An­other fi­nal­ist is Ma­rine House Hos­pi­tal­ity Train­ing Cen­tre at the Mur­rough in Wick­low town for Best Ed­u­ca­tional Build­ing. Ma­rine House has un­der­gone an ex­treme and ex­ten­sive makeover and is now a cus­tomised cen­tre of ex­cel­lence, ful­fill­ing the re­quire­ments of fu­ture clients who wish to en­gage in train­ing to en­ter em­ploy­ment in the hos­pi­tal­ity sec­tor

KWETB River­walk Cafe Culi­nary En­trepreneur­ship ap­pears in the cat­e­gory of Best Ed­u­ca­tion/Train­ing Ini­tia­tive and the Vartry Trails Pro­ject in the cat­e­gory of Best Tourism Ini­tia­tive. The Vartry Trails were of­fi­cially opened by An Taoiseach in June of last year.

Com­ment­ing on the nom­i­na­tions, Cathaoir­leach of Wick­low Mu­nic­i­pal Dis­trict, Cllr Daire Nolan, said: ‘It was great news to see so many en­trants from Wick­low short­listed. It is tes­ta­ment to the hard work of all in­volved who bring these qual­ity pro­jects and events to Wick­low which help to en­hance our every­day lives’.

Wick­low RNLI pa­trol the seas ahead of the start of the 2018 Round Ire­land Yacht Race. Tak­ing a stroll on some of the new gravel paths that were in­stalled as part of the Vartry Trails.
