NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC
There was plenty of football played in the last week as the period of good weather continued. Our under-eights hosted Coolboy Rangers on Sunday morning where both teams played out a series of keenly contested games. The 8’s squad is increasing in numbers by the week and some of them will turn into very tasty footballers. On the day Jack Gavin, Jake Fitzsimons and Kaitlyn Mullen were among the star performers.
Our under-nines had two games in the past week. On Tuesday evening they played away to a strong Wicklow Rovers Green while on Saturday morning we hosted a very good Coolboy Rangers team. Over the course of the two games among the players who starred were David McCormack, Aaron Nolan and Gerry Hoban.
Our under-10s are the draw specialists in the club and so it proved as they played out two draws in the past week. On Monday evening they played at home to Avonmore Black and both teams proceeded to play out an exciting 4-4 draw. The Newtown goals came from Leon O’Connor (2), Lucas Dowdall and JV Kelly. On Saturday morning they travelled to take on Greystones Blue and after a great game both teams had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The goals came from Leon O’Connor and Jack Barlow.
Our under-11s had a narrow defeat at home to a very good Wicklow Rovers Green team on Sunday morning. William Valentine had put the team in front after eight minutes and every player left it all on the pitch in a great effort. Among the players who played well were Aaron Roy, Mikey Synnott and Aidan Heffernan.
Our under-12s had two very good home wins in the past week to keep their interest high in a number of competitions. On Tuesday evening in a Plate game that was reversed to Newtown our team won out eventually on a 5-2 scoreline. Aughrim had given a good account of themselves and with 15 minutes left they led 2-1 but Newtown hit back with a four goal blast to take the points. The goals came from PJ Duffy (2), Jake Robertson, Cormac Chance and Keira Farrelly. On Saturday they hosted Arklow Town B and they took three valuable league points with a 5-1 win. For a understrength team the goals came from Jake Robertson (2), Cormac Chance, Brooklyn Doyle and Cathal O’Toole.
Just to mention, a very well done to our Development Squad travelled to Ferndale Park home of Arklow United FC where they played out a blitz with the home side and Rathnew FC Many thanks to everyone in Arklow United for all their hospitality on the day. Hopefully we can do it again in a few weeks.
