Wicklow People (West Edition) - - WHAT’S ON -

CATHAOIRLEACH of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Irene Winters, was among those to welcome Katie Taylor home to Bray last Friday evening.

Despite heavy downpours, Katie was greeted with applause and cheers from her adoring fans at the bandstand in Bray. The special event was organised by Wicklow County Council to mark Katie’s remarkable achievement, in beating Belgian Delfine Persoon the previous weekend in America.

The huge crowd cheered and applauded as Katie Taylor, the new undisputed lightweight champion of the world, took to the stage on Bray seafront. Master of Ceremonies at the homecoming event, RTE’s Des Cahill, lead the tributes to Katie while conducting a short interview with the boxer who also holds an Olympic Gold Medal amongst her many trophies.

Des was also there to host the event when Taylor returned from London in 2012. The crowd was also treated to videos of Katie’s recent winning bout in New York’s famous Madison Square Garden as well as clips of her previous victories in the ring.

Bouquets of flowers were presented to Katie and her mother Bridget by the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Irene Winters and Mr Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council.

‘It is truly an honour for Bray to welcome home Katie Taylor,’ said Cllr Winters. ‘We are immensely proud of her achievements to date and look forward to celebrating many more victories for Katie in the future.’ Katie told the crowd: ‘The support I get in this town is incredible. It is always great to come back here.’
