Tragic discovery at Kil­coole beach

A man in his 60s was found de­ceased on the beach be­tween Kil­coole and New­cas­tle on Mon­day evening.

The alarm was raised at around 6.30 p.m. when a kit bag was found on the beach con­tain­ing per­sonal be­long­ings such as a phone and car keys.

Mem­bers of Grey­stones Coast Guard as­sisted gar­daí with the search op­er­a­tion.

Gar­daí found the ve­hi­cle in the Kil­coole car park.

Un­for­tu­nately the search re­sulted in the discovery of the man along the shore. Res­cue per­son­nel bat­tled to save his life by ad­min­is­ter­ing CPR but to no avail.

The Coast Guard Res­cue 116 he­li­copter landed on the beach and placed the ca­su­alty in the air­craft. They flew to the air­field at New­cas­tle aero­drome where the man was pro­nounced dead and trans­ferred to a HSE am­bu­lance and brought to Lough­lin­stown Hos­pi­tal.

The de­ceased is not be­lieved to live lo­cally. An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der way in the tragedy.
