Fun at Cool Planet

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS -

ALMOST 150 Girl Guides, Brownies and Ladybirds enjoyed their annual gathering of groups in the Wicklow area with a visit to the Cool Planet Experience at Powerscourt.

Children from Ashford, Bray, Belmont, Delgany, Enniskerry, Greystones, Newcastle and Wicklow took part in the onehour experience at Cool Planet, as well as enjoying ‘stomp rocket’ and ‘miniature greenhouse’ workshops. Participants obtained two badges on the day in the areas of STEM and environmental awareness.

‘The tagline of Irish Girl Guides is ‘Giving Girls Confidence’ and this is done through games, crafts, badges and outdoor activities,’ said organiser Mary Byrne. ‘In recent years we have been developing badges in the area of STEM and environmental awareness, encouraging girls to believe they can be whatever they wish to be as they grow up, and our day out at Cool Planet tied in perfectly with this.’

All groups are run by volunteer leaders and meet once a week. Brownies and Guides can also take part in holidays away, either indoors or camping (for Guides). These holidays give a greater opportunity for the girls to learn independence and more about the natural environment.

‘Cool Planet Experience is a fun and inspirational experience for all ages,’ said centre manager, Aine O’Mahony. ‘It is an ideal day out for youth summer projects, sports teams and language schools.’
