Joyous return for Coolkenno

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT -

THE Coolkenno footballers were crowned Roinn II winners for 2019 without kicking a ball in anger in the final round of matches.

Already-relegated Ballinacor didn’t travel to play the Carlow border side on Saturday evening instead awarding a walkover leaving themselves and Kilcoole as the promoted pair to Division 1A.

Kilcoole have secured back-toback promotions having defeated Baltinglass in the Division 3 league final in 2018 ahead of them winning the Junior ‘A’ championship.

Top spot had been secured in Division 2 the previous weekend so the final two points on offer for Coolkenno were largely immaterial.

The Timmins Cup was presented to captain Don Jackman by Rose Timmins whose husband sponsored the cup for Wicklow GAA 45 years ago.

Interestingly, the last time Coolkenno were victorious in Roinn II (in 2013) they also won the Intermediate championship so no doubt they will be hoping that history repeats itself. At the other end of the Division 2 league it is relegation for Trevord Doyle’s Ballinacor and Rathnew after a difficult league campaign for both sides.

The Coolkenno team and supporters after the presentation of the Division 2 Cup.
