‘Magic ta­ble’ ini­tia­tive is launched at Ark­low Li­brary

County Wick­low Age Friendly and Ark­low Li­brary with the Alzheimer’s So­ci­ety have launched the Tover­talf (Magic Ta­ble) in the li­brary’s com­mu­nity room. Cathaoir­leach of Wick­low County Coun­cil Irene Win­ters of­fi­cially launched the project and said she was very im­pressed with the pos­si­bil­i­ties and the joy the Magic Ta­ble could bring. Cllr Win­ters also thanked Clare Ful­lam for her ded­i­ca­tion and ser­vice to the li­brary and wished her well on her re­tire­ment.

The Magic Ta­ble has been de­signed to help those at a later stage of their dementia jour­ney to be more ac­tive, and to cre­ate mo­ments of fun and hap­pi­ness. It con­sists of a se­ries of interactiv­e games that are pro­jected onto a ta­ble. The games are de­signed to trig­ger a sense of rem­i­nis­cence among play­ers and to en­cour­age stim­u­la­tion so­cially, cog­ni­tively and phys­i­cally. As light sim­u­la­tions, the games in­clude beach and fishing themes. There is also one game that in­volves pop­ping bal­loons.

The Magic Ta­ble is also suit­able for use with chil­dren with autism or other sen­sory needs. Any­one who is in­ter­ested in try­ing out the Magic Ta­ble is en­cour­aged to book the com­mu­nity room at the Ark­low Li­brary and give it a go. For in­for­ma­tion, call 040239977.
