‘Magic table’ initiative is launched at Arklow Library
County Wicklow Age Friendly and Arklow Library with the Alzheimer’s Society have launched the Tovertalf (Magic Table) in the library’s community room. Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Irene Winters officially launched the project and said she was very impressed with the possibilities and the joy the Magic Table could bring. Cllr Winters also thanked Clare Fullam for her dedication and service to the library and wished her well on her retirement.
The Magic Table has been designed to help those at a later stage of their dementia journey to be more active, and to create moments of fun and happiness. It consists of a series of interactive games that are projected onto a table. The games are designed to trigger a sense of reminiscence among players and to encourage stimulation socially, cognitively and physically. As light simulations, the games include beach and fishing themes. There is also one game that involves popping balloons.
The Magic Table is also suitable for use with children with autism or other sensory needs. Anyone who is interested in trying out the Magic Table is encouraged to book the community room at the Arklow Library and give it a go. For information, call 040239977.
