ARKLOW is celebrating after being named the Best Kept Large Town in Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition.

Sandra Duffy of Arklow Tidy Towns said ‘We are absolutely thrilled. This is a massive achievement for the whole town. We were honoured to be nominated. The adjudication took place in May and everyone put in a huge effort. This win is not only great for Arklow, but for the entire county.’

Ireland’s Best Kept Town is an all island competition in which some of the best towns in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition compete against their counterparts in Northern Ireland’s Best Kept competition. It is separate from the annual Tidy Towns competition.

Arklow was nominated by the 2018 TidyTowns adjudicating panel in the Best Kept Large Town category alongside Ardee and Enniskillen.

Chairman of Arklow Tidy Towns, Cllr Tommy Annesley congratulated the Tidy Towns volunteers, CE scheme works, council staff and the wider community for their efforts.

‘It’s amazing, people go out in all weather, both day and night,’ he said. ‘The amount of work they do is incredible. It really is a community effort from everyone.’

Cllr Pat Kennedy thanked everyone involved for their work. ‘We need to keep this progress going because it will help to encourage more people to visit the town.’

Cllr Peir Leonard said ‘massive congratulations to everyone for their community effort to keep Arklow looking fantastic.

‘I’d like to especially acknowledge the work of all the local Tidy Towns volunteers who are relentless in their efforts to keep the town ship shape and council and CE workers who sometimes do not get the recognition for the part they also play in the upkeep of the town.’

Meanwhile, the adjudicating panel for the 2019 TidyTowns competition is expected to visit Arklow shortly.

Susan Duffy said ‘We won silver in 2018 and this year, we are going for gold. The team will re-double its efforts.’

She also thanked everyone in Arklow for their support. ‘This win is everyone. Individuals adopt spots around the town that they keep tidy and this is another reason why we won. The support we get from the community is phenomenal.’
