RATHDRUM businesses are threatening to withdraw all their money and close their accounts in the Bank of Ireland unless it reverses a decision to shut down its only ATM in the town.
Members of Rathdrum Business and Partnership are seeking an urgent meeting with BOI following the shock weekend closure of the ATM as part of stringent new security measures in the wake of a bank raid in Graiguenamanagh.
Over the past two weekends, people trying to withdraw their cash at the ATM found it had been shut down and now have to travel to Wicklow or Arklow to access money out of hours.
‘The Bank of Ireland seem oblivious to the fact that they are helping to kill business here in Rathdrum,’ says Bill Porter, owner of Avondale Sport and Leisure.
A statement released by the bank said the decision had been taken due to security concerns over a small portion of its branch ATMs outside normal opening hours.
We have taken this decision in order to protect our branches in high risk locations from physical attack. We apologise for this temporary inconvenience to our customers,’ they said in the statement.
