Wicklow People (West Edition) - - NEWS -

THREE COUNCILLORS will discuss amongst themselves how they will share a position on the Audit Committee of Wicklow Count Council.

Only two elected members are allowed sit on the Audit Committee. Cllr Mary Kavangh was nominated by Cllr Joe Behan, while Councillors Edward Timmins and Gerry Walsh were already members.

Wicklow County Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Irene Winters, said problems over three sitting members arose two and a half years ago when a position on the Audit Committee was left vacant by Pat Casey’s election to the Dáil.

‘We weren’t allowed three councillors when Pat Casey stood down. I was interested in taking up a position but we were told no less than two councillors were allowed.’

Cllr Gerry Walsh said he had replaced Mr Casey and found the Audit Committee to be ‘most effective.’

However, he added: ‘If other members are prepared to go on and replace me then I am open to that.’

Cllr Edward Timmins has been a member of the committee for close to ten years.

He said: ‘It’s a very good and serious committee. It probably should be freshened up. It has to answer hard questions, while equally respecting the confidentiality of the office.’

The three nominated Councillors will discuss amongst themselves how they will share the two positions on the Audit Committee before coming to an agreement.
