Sporting Proud Triathlon in Brittas Bay will raise funds for St Catherine’s
THE Sporting Proud Triathlon taking place at Brittas Bay in September will help raise funds for St Catherine’s Special School.
A campaign is under way to raise €60,000 to soundproof and insulate the school PE Hall and for other much-needed projects.
St Catherine’s may have finished up for the summer, but, parents and staff will continue to work over the coming months towards making the triathlon a success.
Claire McClean, Chair of the Parent’s Association, said: ‘Our school in Kilmullen Lane, Newcastle, was built 36 years ago of simple block construction with no insulation and certainly no sound proofing. Many of our children are very sensitive to sound and noise just bounces off the walls and is deafening. It’s totally unsuitable for children with sensory issues. We need to ensure the children are able to play games and do therapy in an environment that caters for their special requirements.’
The PE Hall has no insulation at all and ends up sweltering in the summer and freezing during the winter months, costing the school a considerable amount in heating bills.
‘The children at St Catherine’s have moderate to profound intellectual and physical disabilities and may also have an Autism Spectrum Disorder,’ said Ms McClean. ‘These children are very complex and the environment in which they are taught is extremely important to their ability to learn and progress.’
The Sporting Proud Triathlon consists of two events: the Olympic length, which includes a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run and a sprint, and the fun event, which includes a 75km swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Entrants can compete as individuals or in teams of two or three.
‘It’s a fun event whether you are a serious athlete or just want to do your bit to help special needs children in our community,’ added Claire. ‘Special needs children are amongst the most vulnerable and can be forgotten, but taking part or making a donation to St Catherine’s Special School will have a huge positive impact on the children.’
The event is due to take place on Saturday, September 7.
