Plenty of success in Tullamore

Wicklow People (West Edition) - - SPORT -

WELL done to all the Wicklow athletes who took part in day one of the national track and field juvenile championships today in Tullamore.

It was a Greystones AC double in the Girls under-17 Triple Jump, where Ellen McNally took a silver medal with a jump of 10.42m, and only just behind her was Emma Quirk in Bronze, with a jump of 10.19m. Next medal up was Jack McGlone, also from Greystones AC in the boys under-16 800m, this was a very high standard race, and with 50 metres to go Jack was neck and neck with three other athletes all going for the silver medal, but it was Jack who dug the deepest to hang on for silver in a time of 2.04.

The final medal of the day came from Roisin Tracey (Ashford AC) who took a convincing silver medal in the girls U-18 2k Steeplechase.

Other notable performances included Joe Dowd (Greystones AC), who was fourth in the very tough boys U-18 3k steeplechase (which involves getting over 34 barriers!) and Joe Prendergast who was fifth in a very competitive Boys U-17 800m heats, in a time of 2.02, to make it into the final.

Day 2 and 3 are on this weekend coming and hopefully we will see more success again!
