BRAY BOWLS

The bowlers of Bray are making full use of our short summer.

Monday, July 1, brought Bray C a comfortable 5-1 home victory against Lerne in Division 4.

Not too far away in Ballyman, Bray D of Division 5 went down 5-1 at scenic Dun Laoghaire Golf Club.

The Bray team had also lost the reverse fixture by the same score earlier in the season.

On Wednesday the ladies recorded their second win in a row - against Westmanstown - which lifts them to third from bottom in Division 1.

And so the cream rises. The club championships are going full tilt these days. In the mixed triples, Owen Byrne proved that straight bowls are no disadvantage to a good skip as his team overcame the challenge of Pat Brett, himself on top form.

It was a good Thursday for the aged. Vets 1 won in Bray against Lerne.

Vets 2 took home 3 points from Blackrock where the green was in superb condition in advance of the BLI Championship Finals at the end of the month. John Reynolds, Bryon Dancer and Pat Crinnion shone on the day.

Vets 3 brought a point back from Trim thanks to the scintillating form of Captain Eoghain Brady.

The last remaining Bray representatives in the BLI Championships, Nick Howlett, Eoghain Brady, Dave Meaney and Alan Rath made their exit at the quarter final stage in the Sixsmith Cup, away to a strong CYM Quartet, backboned by Irish International, Gareth Pierpoint.

In league Division 1 the leaders, CYM, came to town on Saturday. In a close match it was all square with two ends to go but the visitors finished the stronger and won 5-2.

Bray’s winning skips were Wally Doyle and Tommy Cahill while Pat Brett’s rink lost by only a shot. Meanwhile, up on Clontarf’s lush sward, Bray B got just a point.

The winning rink was O.Byrne/M.Sullivan/J.Dunne/E. Morley(skip).

In the women’s Open cup on Sunday, Bray went down 75-52 at Crumlin, with just one rink victorious for the good guys.

This Wednesday the ladies take on CYM in Failte Park and will be looking to avenge an earlier defeat in Terenure.

In Thursday’s veterans matches, Vets 1 will be severely tested at Crumlin, Vets 2 have the day off, and Vets 3 are at home to Santry’s finest, Sportslink.

In the men’s Division 1 on Saturday, the gloves will be off when Bray A travel to fellow strugglers, Kenilworth. Bray B of Division 2, also near the wrong end of their table, will likewise be putting on their mean faces for the visit of neighbours, Shankill.

Division 4’s Bray C have Monday the 15th off but in Division 5 Bray D face the challenge of Railway Union’s heavy green. Get those muscles ready, lads!

Well done to Jean Kane on winning the lotto this week (and being a red-hot bowler these days too!). Remember Bray Bowling Club (off Adelaide Road) is always looking for new members, male or female, young or old.

We as a club will be organising something that will involve all the kids of the area.

The Fun Day will run from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the Community Grounds and there will be something for everyone.

As we are hoping to have a Mini World Cup competition running around this time, it is hoped that all finals will take place as part of the Fun Day (more details next week).

We have two players from the club celebrating their birthdays in the coming week and they are Rian Martin from our under-8 team and Jack Coughlan from our under-13 team.

Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C and have a great day.

On a sadder note the club extends their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Peter (Bruiser) Byrne from Rathnew who sadly passed away last week. May he rest in peace.
