THIS year’s Base2Race Harbourman Triathlon took place on Sunday in near perfect race conditions.

Competitors were greeted by flat calm seas, light winds and temperatures hovering around 18-21c. The event was hosted by Wicklow Triathlon Club and featured a packed field.

In the women’s race, Ailbhe Carroll and Orla Walsh battled it out for top spot as both competitors were making their 2019 BMW Triathlon National Series debuts.

Ailbhe Carroll made her mark at the front of the field, emerging from the water with an impressive swim of 18mins 42secs over 1,500m – the quickest of the entire women’s field. Carroll made the most of this lead out on the undulating bike course, holding the gap to the rest of the field.

However, Orla Walsh was running strong behind and was just one minute behind Carroll by the first time around the lighthouse. Coming up the steps for the second time, Walsh overtook Carroll and retained her lead all the way to the finishing line.

Chris Mintern won the men’s race, only eight days after he won the Middle Distance National Championship. He led the race from the very start and finished three minutes ahead as the second placed competitor, Con Doherty.
