FUNDING FOR BUS SHELTERS IN FOUR TOWNS AND VILLAGES
FUNDING HAS been awarded for bus shelters to be installed in four communities in West Wicklow.
Baltinglass Town Renewal Group, Manor Kilbride Community group, Hollywood Community Forum and Blessington and District Forum will all receive grants of €5,000 to build new shelters.
A spokeperson for Wicklow County Council said the awards had been made in ‘keeping with County Wicklow’s Age Friendly Strategy.
‘The County Wicklow Age Friendly Strategy 2017–2022 was created by older people for older people and sets out a series of actions which they would like to see progressed for the county.’
‘One of those actions was to develop bus shelters and seating as required and we believe that this funding provided by the Department of Rural and Community Affairs will progress this action,’ said Richella Wood, Wicklow County Council’s Age Friendly Liaison Officer,
‘A large percentage of older people rely on public transport which supports them to keep their independence.’
The exact locations of the bus shelters have yet to be agreed on.
‘This must take into account technical and engineering considerations, discussion with the relevant service providers and input from the local community groups,’ said the Wicklow County Council spokesperson.
Cllr Gerry O’Neill, Cathaoirleach of Baltinglass Municipal District, welcomed the announcement that funding would be made available for new bus shelters in the west of the county.
‘It’s good news that west Wicklow has been included with these new shelters. I now want to ensure that the project moves forward to ensure the fundning isn’t lost.’
